About
In 1930, owners Horace Havemeyer and Adeline Freylinghuysen commissioned renowned architect Rosario Candela to file plans for a 14-story apartment building on the site of the 1898 mansion of their father, sugar magnate Henry Ogden Havemeyer. After the site was cleared, the dimensions of the financial depression became evident and the site remained vacant until construction of the current, art deco-inspired, structure commenced in 1948. The building was ready for occupancy in 1950. The yellow brick building, which was one of the first new apartment buildings to be erected on Fifth Avenue after World War II, is distinguished by a unique facade, which has many angles that create shallow indentations. It has a three-story rusticated limestone base and its fourth-floor has four limestone bandcourses between the windows that add considerably to its elegant appearance. The building entrance has a polished red granite surround and a stainless steel canopy. 1 East 66th Street was the last creation by Candela, whose work included such other prominent apartment houses as Sutton Place South, 834,960 and 1040 Fifth Avenue, 720,740,770,775 and 778 Park Avenue, and was designed in cooperation with architect Paul Resnik. It is one of only a handful apartment houses in New York that provide a private dining room and an extra service elevator to bring meals from the central kitchen to the residences. The building has been home to many socialites, patrons of the art and prominent families in the manufacturing, banking, insurance and publishing industries. Actor Gary Cooper kept an apartment in the building, which his widow Veronica turned into her primary residence after his death in 1961. She remained in the building until 2001.
